...are best friends, Luna chases Bacon around the yard, they play constantly,
and wear each other out! Last night, you could have sworn that we had 2 dead
dogs, the way they were laying in the living room! :o) Luna got introduced to
Eve’s family last night, and they LOVE her. She was loving all of the attention
Morgan (our niece) was giving her! Thank you so much, we are giving her a ton of
TLC, I really thinks she feels at home already!
Jamie
We did get your pictures, thank you very much! I am sure that we will take a
ton, since we have an un-godly amount of pictures of Bacon, so we will make sure
to send them to you!
UPDATE: 9/14/07 Preface by Sherry Voigt:
It is rare that we know the history in depth, if at all, when a dog
comes into our Rescue; but there are occasions when we do discover more.
Thankfully, Luna’s guardian did share with us, and I passed the information on
to Jamie and Eve, with the hope that it would help them in understanding her
even more. I fostered Luna until 3 days prior to her adoption; some of the
behaviors Jamie and Eve are seeing exhibited by Luna were not apparent while
she was with me. This strengthens what we share with prospective adopters: each
rescue dog needs time to adjust and may exhibit traits unknown to us. That is
why we feel continued support for new adopters and the dogs is so important.
Jamie and Eve are doing an outstanding job of parenting Luna, and they
appreciate the support Leana gives them.
"Dear Sherry
I picked Luna up in October 2005 on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in
Montana, pregnant, starving, and living on bugs and pine nuts. She was very
pregnant and about to give birth too. I was living in Whiteriver, SD and already
had 2 cats and 2 dogs, all strays or shelter animals. My plan all along was to
find her a new home because four critters was my limit in terms of how much
attention I could give them working full time. I did find good homes for
puppies, got her spayed as soon as the vet said it was ok, and looked for a home
for about another six months. Finally, a couple in Mission, SD said they would
take her. They had two kids; Luna LOVES kids; and the man was great with her. I
did check on her a couple times over the next couple months and she was in great
shape.
I moved away to the east coast for a job then. When
I returned to see Luna 9 months later, in July, she was in terrible shape, tied
up to a tree with a huge bloody gash in her ear; her back leg had been injured
and was scarred. She also had worms and was very malnourished. It turned out the
couple had broken up, the woman had gotten the dog (it was the man who was the
animal person) and poor Luna had been terribly neglected.
Once I saw her condition, I told the woman that I
need to take her back and get her to the vet’s asap. I took her to the vet, got
her dewormed, had them x-ray her leg (which healed almost to good as new in the
2-3 weeks she was back with me, with Rymadil proscribed by the vet and good
Science Diet wet and dry food 2x a day). I let the woman know, who did not seem
to care that much that I was taking her back because she was not being cared
for.
I am now living in New Mexico with Luna’s “foster
sisters,” Stella and Pixie. I saw that she had been adopted on the website, and
that is so great. I have rescued a lot of dogs on my own over the past five or
six years, but I just couldn’t find her the right home. Thanks for taking care
of her; she is a very special girl. (And by the way, she REALLY likes Science
Diet Sensitive Stomach.)
Could you tell me how she is doing in her new place?
It broke my heart to give her up, but I just couldn’t find her a good home on my
own.
Amanda"
Wow, what to say?
We never knew that Luna had such a traumatic history. Eve and I are stunned
and sad to hear of what has happened to poor Luna.
But like Eve just said, “I guess it is true, Dogs DO live in the present.”
Well, we have owned Luna for about 3 weeks now, we have invited her into our
home along with our other dog, Bacon. Bacon is an 85 lb. Mastiff-Retriever Mix,
he is brindle, has an incredibly charismatic personality, and is a neighborhood
favorite. We felt as though Bacon needed a friend, and when we saw the clip of
Luna on the internet, doing similar actions to what Bacon does (rolling over and
always wanting his belly scratched, etc) we knew we had to meet her.
Our lives haven’t been the same since! Ha! Well, let me describe our living
situation – we keep both Bacon and Luna inside our 1960’s style Rambler, they
both have beds that they sleep on over-night, and we started trying to crate
train Luna, but she wants nothing to do with it, I guess we now know the reason
why. It got to the point that Luna wouldn’t even come through the back door, she
would cower in the corner of the garage, so it has proved to be a little bit
challenging, but we started doing tests with the dogs to see if we could keep
them out during the day. Well, let’s just say that we are doing a lot of
vacuuming when we get home, because the playing and the sleeping on the couch
leaves behind what can only be described as evidence that a couple dogs have
been there!
Bacon and Luna love to play together. We have a fairly good sized back yard,
and they are constantly chasing after each other. It seems that they are
constantly playing, where Bacon will pick the fight, or Luna will pick the
fight, but the funniest thing that we have seen is when Luna will come up behind
Bacon, attack, and then run away, and crumble into a ball on the ground, and
Bacon will jump on her. It is hilarious. Sometimes they get a little rough, and
we have to intervene, but both are snoring by 9:00 every night.
We did notice that Luna had a little bit of a limp after we adopted her, we
took her to the vet, and it seems that she has some fluid built up on her “knee”
but it isn’t anything to be worried about right now, according to our vet. We
are trying to keep her from playing too hard, so she doesn’t do any damage to
her leg, but it almost proves to be impossible!
All of our neighbors love Bacon, he is a neighborhood favorite, and Luna is
quickly gaining notoriety. I live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of
original home owners, most of which are retired, so a lot of them stop off to
say hello to the dogs, and give treats. Let’s just say that both Bacon and Luna
are not starving – I would say that multiple treats per day is an
understatement!
We are working out a couple issues – We have spent a lot of money landscaping
our yard, and rambunctious playing has taken out a few of our plants, but we
figure they are perennials, and it is already September, so we are sure that
they will come back next year – Luna is also a digger, we have found, but we are
working on some ideas on how to stop this, with Leana’s help.
I guess it comes down to the fact that both my wife and I are animal lovers –
in fact, as I write this, I see a little blonde tail waving to my right, as Luna
is all but laying on my wife’s lap, getting her belly rubbed – if I have ever
seen a dog smile before, I am seeing one now! So, Luna has found a good home,
and a very loyal friend in Bacon, and we think that they are both having the
time of their lives.
I am going to attempt to send some pictures of the dogs – hopefully they come
through – let me know if they don’t, and I will try to re-send them. Thanks!
